Roger Chou - 2024 Distinguished Lecturer Speaker
Roger Chou is a Professor in the Department of Medical Informatics & Clinical Epidemiology and the Department of Medicine at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) School of Medicine and Director of the Pacific Northwest Evidence-based Practice Center. His clinical background is general internal medicine. He has authored over 300 peer-reviewed articles, including numerous systematic reviews, and led or participated in clinical guideline development efforts in chronic pain and opioids, low back pain, addiction, and other topics, and is among the top 2% cited scientists in the world. His reviews have been used by the American College of Physicians, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the US Preventive Services Task Force, the American Pain Society, the American Urological Association, the World Health Organization, and others to develop clinical practice guidelines. Dr. Chou serves as a methodologist for several World Health Organization guideline development groups, served as Coordinating Editor of the Cochrane Back and Neck and Senior Editor of Cochrane Musculoskeletal, and serves on the Board of Scientific Counselors of the CDC’s National Centers for Injury Prevention and Control.
Nathan Hutting
Nathan Hutting (1980) studied physiotherapy (2003) and manual therapy (2009). In 2015, he was awarded a PhD for his dissertation on self-management for employees with complaints of the arm, neck or shoulder (Radboud University, the Netherlands). Nathan is currently working in the Netherlands as an associate professor at HAN University of Applied Sciences in the Occupation & Health research group. He also works as a physiotherapist and manual therapist in private practice. Since 2022, Nathan has served on the board of the VvAA, the largest association of healthcare professionals in the Netherlands with over 130,000 members. He is also a board member of the Physiotherapy Research Society (United Kingdom) and the Pain, Mind and Movement Special Interest Group of the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP).
Nathan has been a member and chair of many working groups and advisory committees related to manual therapy and physiotherapy. Currently, he is a member of the Scientific College of Physical Therapy (WCF) of the Royal Dutch Society for Physical Therapy (KNGF) and a member of the scientific advisory board of the Dutch RSI association. Nathan was a member of the congress programme committee of the 2023 World Physiotherapy Congress and he is a current member of the congress programme committee for the 2025 World Physiotherapy Congress.
Nathan was a board member of the Dutch Manual Therapy Association (NVMT) for nine years (2014−2023) and served as an IFOMPT Member Organisation delegate for over seven years (2016−2023). He has been a member of the IFOMPT Advisory Group on Finance since 2016 and has been the group’s chair since 2021.
Nathan’s current research topics include musculoskeletal conditions, self-management, patient-centred care, occupational health and vascular conditions. He has published over 50 peer-reviewed articles. Many of these articles have significantly influenced musculoskeletal physiotherapy practice (for example, regarding the assessment of the neck region for potential vascular conditions and blood flow limitations, and the provision of person-centred care and self-management support in musculoskeletal practice). Nathan has delivered numerous international keynote speeches and congress presentations, and lectured in Africa, Europe, Asia, North America and Oceania/Australia. He chaired focused symposia at the World Physiotherapy congresses in 2017, 2019, 2021 and 2023. Nathan is an associate editor of the European Journal of Physiotherapy and a member of the editorial board of BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders. He is also a member of the international advisory board of Musculoskeletal Science and Practice.
Jeremy Lewis, PhD, FCSP
Jeremy Lewis is a Consultant Physiotherapist and Honorary Professor of Musculoskeletal Research (University of Nottingham, UK) and Professor of Physiotherapy (University of Limerick, Ireland). He was born in New Zealand and trained in Australia. He works in the UK National Health Service. He has been awarded a Fellowship of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, which is the highest award the CSP can offer. He has been acknowledged as an eminent clinician in his profession (UK Department of Health National AHP Clinical Expert Database). Clinically, Jeremy assesses and supports people presenting with complex shoulder problems. Jeremy has also trained as a sonographer and performs ultrasound guided shoulder injections as part of the rehabilitation process if required
and appropriate. He has also completed an MSc (Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy), and Postgraduate Diplomas in Sports Physiotherapy, and in Biomechanics, as well as MSc modules in injection therapy for soft tissues and joints. He also has a Postgraduate Certificate in Diagnostic Imaging (Ultrasound). He has also qualified as an Independent (non-medical) Prescriber.
Jeremy has taught over 500 international workshops in over 45 countries and territories on this favourite clinical subject, the shoulder. He is frequently invited to present keynote and invited lectures internationally, has appeared on news programs and presented podcasts talking about shoulder problems. His research and publications have been picked up by international news organisations. Jeremy works both clinically and in the academic world and has more than 150 research publications. His main areas of research interest are rotator cuff related shoulder pain, frozen shoulder, injection therapy, exercise therapy self-management, sustainability and . He has also co-authored a paper entitled: Is it time to reframe how we care for people with non-traumatic musculoskeletal pain? He has recently edited and authored a book: The Shoulder: Theory & Practice. The first print run of 2000 books sold out internationally in 2 weeks and 4 days, and the second run, in under 3 weeks. It was recently classified as a top 10 best-seller. In addition to his own research, he supervises PhD and MSc students. Jeremy is a special features (Viewpoint) editor for the Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy (JOSPT). He was a co-editor and author for Grieve’s Modern Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy (4th ed) and is currently part of the editorial team for Edition 5. He has written many book chapters and has written the forwards for 4 internationally acclaimed textbooks.
Jeremy loves gardening, carpentry, Tai Chi, and riding his bike through the woods, but readily admits he isn’t great at any of these activities.
Sara R. Piva, PT, PhD, FAPTA
Sara Piva is a Professor and Vice Chair for Research, in the Department of Physical Therapy, at the University of Pittsburgh. She directs the Physical Therapy-Clinical and Translational Research Center, a clinic that runs rehabilitation trials for the research community. She received her Physical Therapy degree from the FEEVALE University and a master’s degree in sports medicine from the University of Passo Fundo, both in Brazil. She concluded her Master’s in musculoskeletal physical therapy and a PhD degree in rehabilitation sciences from the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Piva has over 15 years of clinical experience primarily in orthopedic physical therapy. She has been an Orthopaedic Certified Specialist and a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy for over 20 years. Her research focuses on developing and testing new paradigms of exercise programs to improve physical function of individuals with musculoskeletal conditions and her research has resulted in more than 100 peer-reviewed manuscripts, and been funded by NIH, Department of Defense, PCORI, and research foundations. She has been part of more than 20 clinical studies, of which over a dozen are randomized trials testing the effectiveness of rehabilitation interventions is a variety of orthopaedic conditions.
