Research Abstracts

Goal / Purpose

The Research Committee supports and promotes clinical reasoning and research that elevates our profession. The focus of the abstracts must be related to projects involving orthopaedic manual physical therapy (OMPT) (including thrust / non-thrust manipulation, trigger point dry needling, pain science or motor control). Case reports / case series are encouraged. However, these cases should provide new insight, a unique intervention, and highlight clinical reasoning in such a way that they add to the current OMPT knowledge. Abstracts of COMPLETED projects ONLY will be reviewed and scored by the Research Committee work. Preliminary data from larger scale projects will be accepted if the abstract fully describes the data analysis and results.

The Research Committee is looking for abstracts related to the advancement of the OMPT knowledge. Topics include any research discussing manual therapy techniques, OMPT education, motor control and the pain sciences.

Please read author instructions for details on poster and platform presentations. NOTE: All 5x5 presentations will be limited to five (5) slides AND five (5) minutes. Abstracts will be submitted to the ScholarOne by clicking here. The ScholarOne portal will be open until June 1, 2017.

Research study presentation formats at the conference include:

    1. case report / case series (may be poster or 5x5 presentation)
    2. clinical pearl (will be a 5x5 presentation) discussion of and DEMONSTRATION of a unique OMPT technique. Please click here for further details on the clinical pearl guidelines
  1. review report: systematic reviews / descriptive review / hypothesis paper
  2. research study: can be qualitative or quantitative
  3. special interest report

Abstracts will be limited to 2500 characters (NOT word count). Abstract submissions that are over the limit are not complete and will not be reviewed. References are not required within the abstract. All finished presentations are expected to be based on the current evidence with references appropriately noted. Case report / case series and clinical pearls should have at least five (5) references. Abstract for research studies, included pilot studies, must include final data analysis for the project being presented (even if a pilot study).

Abstract mentoring: The author has the option to self-select to receive feedback PRIOR to abstract grading. The AAOMPT Research Committee will review abstracts and submit feedback ONE time to the author. The author will have one week to address the concerns and resubmit. After that one week window of review / editing, ScholarOne will not be open for further edits.

Abstract grading / selection: After mentoring, the Research Committee will grade the abstracts (see link) for rubric. Email decisions of acceptance and format of presentation will be made in the summer.
